School Gardens: Learning Beyond the Classroom

The Green Explorers Club's School Garden Program helps teachers and staff establish and maintain school gardens while offering students a hands-on, garden-themed science curriculum designed for students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade in the Chicago area or San Diego County. Over 6-8 weeks, students participate in weekly one-hour sessions featuring outdoor activities and in-class projects that they take home to observe or discuss with their families, allowing students to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

How Our School Garden Curriculum Works:

The Green Explorers Club School Garden curriculum is customized to your location and offers a complete set of project plans, shopping lists with links to materials, and teacher resources for easy instruction.

Over 6-8 weeks, students explore key gardening and sustainability concepts, building skills and confidence to manage tasks independently. Week 1 focuses on garden planning and seed identification, while Week 2 introduces pollinator gardens and milkweed seed balls. In Week 3, students create a garden map and learn companion planting techniques.

Additional activities include making compost in a bottle and preparing a meatless pizza with garden-grown veggies. Students also participate in regular garden maintenance tasks like watering, weeding, and monitoring plant growth.
